Description
- Perform routine protective service and responsible human support work in the City Jail and the annex; does related work as required. Performs routine duties and responsibilities when required. Performs routine duties and responsibilities when assigned to specialized units. This job involves working 12 hour rotating shifts as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a shift supervisor.
- Position involves a variety of public safety duties in the Sheriff’s Office. Processes the inmates into the penal institution taking charge of personal effects and advising them of institutional rules and regulations. Attends to the personal needs and activities of the prisoners according to institutional needs and requirements; Conducts periodic security checks of the inmates as well as the institution grounds; Escorts and transports inmates to judicial proceedings and other institutions; Prepares records and reports of daily activity; Reports to work on assigned duty schedule; Performs other reasonable duties as assigned.
- General knowledge of laws, rules and regulations relating to courts and criminal justice; skill in the use of firearms, public safety equipment and motor vehicles; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously, firmly and tactfully with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action. General knowledge of the practice of modern penology as related to the supervision and care of person under institutionalized restraint; ability to maintain good working relationships with coworkers and with the public.Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
- Possession of a driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must meet and maintain all Office and State Training and education requirements for position.
